In Cherokee mythology, there are several snake-related deities, but one of the most prominent is the Uktena, a giant horned serpent with glowing scales and diamond-like eyes.
According to legend, the Uktena lived in the mountains and guarded a great treasure that was coveted by many. The creature was so fearsome that anyone who dared to look into its eyes would be immediately paralyzed or killed.
One Cherokee tale tells of a warrior named Aganunitsi, who sought to slay the Uktena and claim its treasure. Aganunitsi was aided by a small bird that told him how to defeat the serpent.
Aganunitsi followed the bird's advice and managed to strike the Uktena in its one vulnerable spot, killing the creature and claiming its treasure.
However, the warrior suffered greatly as a result of his victory. He became ill and suffered from terrible nightmares for the rest of his life, haunted by the Uktena's powerful spirit.
Today, the Uktena remains an important figure in Cherokee culture and is often depicted in artwork and storytelling. The creature represents power, mystery, and danger, and serves as a reminder of the sacredness of the natural world.
Panel 1: Sagefish and Flower are standing at the edge of a great river that cuts through the Great Smoky Mountains. Sagefish is looking down into the water while Flower floats beside him, holding a small stick.
Sagefish: "This river is so powerful. It's almost like it has a life of its own."
Flower: "It does. The spirits of this land run deep, Sagefish."
Panel 2: Suddenly, a large shadow falls over them, and they look up to see a massive serpent with glowing scales and diamond-like eyes.
Sagefish: "What is that?!"
Flower: "It's the Uktena, the serpent of legend!"
Panel 3: The Uktena lunges at Sagefish and Flower, its jaws wide open.
Sagefish: "We have to do something!"
Flower: "I have an idea. Follow me!"
Panel 4: Flower leads Sagefish to a nearby tree, where they climb up into the branches.
Sagefish: "What are we going to do?!"
Flower: "Just wait and watch."
Panel 5: The Uktena coils itself around the base of the tree, ready to strike.
Sagefish: "It's coming for us!"
Flower: "Not for long."
Panel 6: Flower touches the tree with his flower, and suddenly the tree comes to life, growing large thorns all around the trunk.
Sagefish: "Whoa! That's amazing!"
Panel 7: The Uktena tries to attack again, but this time it is impaled on the thorns of the tree.
Sagefish: "We did it! But what do we do now?"
Flower: "We honor the Uktena and its power, and we continue to protect this land from those who would exploit it."
Panel 8: Sagefish and Flower look out over the Great Smoky Mountains, their new adventure just beginning.
Sagefish: "Let's do it. For the spirits of this land."
Flower: "For the spirits of this land."
